Stopping Water Waste in Clermont

Agriculture is the largest consumer of water with over 70% of the global freshwater withdrawals going to irrigated fields.¹  Unfortunately, a large fraction of that water is wasted due to inefficient irrigation techniques. Experts estimate that the agricultural production will need to expand by 70% by 2050 to feed over 10 billion people².

As a leading manufacturer of agricultural irrigation products, Senninger knows that growers need more efficient irrigation solutions that help them save water while also meeting the food needs of a growing population. Since the company’s inception, Senninger has led the way in the development of many irrigation products that offer not just water “efficiency”, but also water “productivity”. But we want to do more than just focusing on innovative products. That is why we set Corporate Social Responsibility goals to help guide our efforts as responsible stewards of water and the overall environment.

As part of the Hunter Industries family of companies, we want to help to find solutions to the global water crisis by using water wisely. “Doing so is critical for our reputation and leadership across all sectors of the irrigation industry. Lowering our water consumption will also help us mitigate future cost increases as the demand for water rises and meet the needs of customers who want water-wise irrigation solutions.” (2019 Hunter Corporate Social Responsibility Report).

In 2018, Hunter Industries established a goal to reduce water consumption by 30% by 2030. To that effect, Senninger is investigating new technologies to save water. In 2019, we installed water meters at our Clermont facility to gather more granular data. Through this process, we identified leaks in the campus kitchen and the regulator department, both of which contributed to higher water-use numbers. We are now investigating technology that would automatically shut off the water if a leak is detected.
